Synopsis

This book is a comprehensive effort to systematically, academically, and deeply document, analyze, and interpret the cultural wealth of the Karo people. Amidst rapid social change and modernization, ethnographic documentation such as this is very important so that cultural identity does not simply become a memory, but remains alive as knowledge, wisdom, and heritage that can be passed on to future generations. As one of the major ethnic groups in North Sumatra, the Karo people have a unique system of values, worldview, language, art, customs, and social structure. This cultural diversity is reflected in the Karo language and literature, fine arts, ethnic music and dance, cuisine, and traditional woven fabrics. All of these elements form a cosmological unity that places the relationship between humans, nature, and ancestors in balanced harmony. This book was compiled to describe the elements of Karo culture as a medium for understanding the philosophy behind it. Every traditional ritual, from birth to marriage to death, contains moral and spiritual values that emphasize the importance of togetherness, respect for ancestors, and appreciation for the harmony of life. Every form of art, whether visual, musical, or performative, is both an aesthetic expression and a medium of social and spiritual education for the community. Using ethnographic, linguistic, artistic, and cultural anthropological approaches, this book attempts to present a comprehensive picture of the Karo people's way of life, both in its traditional context and its dynamics in the modern era.
